Happy Birthday Kirk MacDonald! Born on this day in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, the Canadian saxophonist has established himself as one of Canada’s all-time greats.
As a member of the Canadian Jazz Collective, alongside Derrick Gardner (trumpet) and Lorne Lofsky (guitar), MacDonald recorded Septology – The Black Forest Session earlier this year. The trio recorded the work at MPS Studios, in Villingen, Germany, on the eastern edge of the Black Forest. MPS Studios was a favored recording studio for another Canadian jazz great, Oscar Peterson.
Of special note, Kirk’s daughter Virginia MacDonald makes a special appearance on clarinet in the song Silent Voices.
Kirk is a two-time Juno Award winner and is a full-time professor at Humber College in Toronto.
