Happy birthday to one of the most influential saxophonists in modern funk and soul music, Steven “Doc” Kupka! Known for his distinctive baritone saxophone sound, Kupka has been an essential member of Tower of Power since the band’s inception in 1968.

Kupka’s contributions to Tower of Power have been nothing short of monumental. Alongside tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, he co-founded the band and helped to create its signature sound, blending elements of funk, soul, and R&B. With his deep, rich tone and soulful playing style, Kupka has become an icon of the baritone saxophone and has inspired countless saxophonists around the world.

Throughout his career, Kupka has played on countless Tower of Power recordings and has written many of the band’s most beloved songs. He has also collaborated with a wide range of other musicians, including Elton John, Huey Lewis and the News, and Santana.

As an educator, Kupka has also been a mentor to many young saxophonists, sharing his knowledge and expertise with a new generation of players.
