Raised in a musical family, Garrett began playing the saxophone at the age of nine. Garrett’s professional career took off when he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra, led by Duke’s son Mercer Ellington, in 1978.

In the early 1980s, Kenny Garrett joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, an influential jazz ensemble that nurtured the careers of numerous prominent jazz musicians. Garrett’s time with the Jazz Messengers further honed his skills and led to collaborations with other jazz legends, including Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.
